I did a long search but didn't find the specific information I'm looking for. I want to put a rear 20 gallon fuel in my '59 and have been thinking about one from an Intermediate CJ, but the filler neck looks like it would be a problem with the frame rail and rear floor. What have others used to swap in? I'll need one with a return line.

    Thanks.

(Wasn't sure if this needed to go to the Fab forum or here so I started here. :) )

I believe the intermediate tanks are the same as the 70 1/2 and '71 tanks and hold 15 gallons. The filler neck comes out of the tank and goes between the top of the frame rail and the body tub and then connects to the rubber filler hose that exits the rear of the tub. These tanks are ready for return lines so that's no problem. The bars on the frame that triangulate out ti the rear pintle hitch plate will need to be removed from your '59 frame as the top of the tank is relatively close to the rear floor area. Hope this helps. I have seen a 20 gallon tank conversion recently somewhere but this tank adds the extra capacity to the bottom of the tank making it hang sorta low and in my opinion in harms way and decreasing rear ground clearance.

I have a custom tank in mine, and it was tough to get over 16 gals in cap in that area. Not sure a 20 would fit and not hang down so low that you smash it with the rear pumkin (uh - ya - did that - that's why the custom made from 1/8" steel)...

Thanks for the input, guys. I think the tank I was looking at will work after all. It will hang a little low but not below the center section of the rear axle, so I'm hoping it will be okay. I'm a slow trail guy, so even a little scraping shouldn't hurt.

I have already cut out the stock "V" when I replaced the rear cross member. Just need to clean it up a bit. There was more room between the rear frame rail and the body then I'd remembered. I was thinking I'd put the filler on the driver's side but the other side will work just as well.

Already have one under the seat. Looking to increase the volume and not sit on it. :)

I know, just being a smarty pants. I think that as unsafe as that tank feels right under my butt it is safer that mashing it on a tree stump! how about another tank under the passenger seat with a connector hose? Blocks off the tool box under that seat, and prob need a mirror image of the driver's side seat mount....yeah maybe not....I agree I need more fuel capacity though!

The stock 16 gallon tank with factory skid plate from a '70 1/2 to '75 model is very difficult to damage. IMO, you've really got to be trying to 'mash' it to do any damage.

I have both tanks on my CJ-stock 10 gal under the seat, and 15 gal with skidplate from a 71-75 CJ. IIRC there's a couple of different versions of the rear tank, but I bought the tank and all the associated parts all together from Mile High Jeep in Denver.
