Starting a new camp trailer

Took a daylight picture to show better how the tongue integrates with the body.

 

Making more progess even though it feels like an oven in my garage.

Completed the 2 roof panels and test fitting them. I will not permamently mount them until after I have weather proofed the bottom of the body.





The hole in the panel is for the fanatastic fan. I have the wiring conduit already in place to run the wiring through the panel and into the back wall.

Today I also started working on the wheel wells. Will have pics of those hopefully tomorrow.

 

Finished the first wheel well today. Have to cut out the other side and put it together.

you do some amazing work........I'm loving your build thread! It's gonna make a nice place to rest up while on the trail.

 

Finished the wheel wells today. It's now ready to take the body off and weather proof the underside. I pulled it out of the garage to take a quick pick to show it s real size behind the Jeep. There is enough room between the jeep and the body to open the tailgate.

I do not have special training or skills. I have never attempted anything on this scale before in my life. The largest woodworking project I have done before I started this was a cabinate for DVD trays in my living room. Before that was simple trim work in my house.

As for the frame the only project I have welded up before this is my welding table. Keep everything square from the beginning and it makes life easier at the end.

It does not take special skills or years of experience. Just take your time and do things right the first time. Keep your overall design in the back of your mind as you are working. It will help you make the right choices as the trailer goes together. Don't get antsy and take short cuts as that just makes more work for you. Trust me I have had to fix several minor issues because I did not take enough time to think out what I was doing. What you see in these pictures represents almost 9 months of work and planning on my part.

 

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'll keep that in mind when I tackle hard doors for the CJ. I tend to do better taking things apart and putting them back together again, rather than building from the ground up.

I have torn apart and then abandonded snow sleds, ATVs, a dirt bike, 2 boats, 2 Ramchargers (actually I wrecked one towing it with my fathers ranger, totalling both in one fell swoop-long story) another ranger I was gonna swap a 5 liter in but the frame was rotted, gave up on my 96 t-bird after the oil pan rusted through, and then finally a 70 F-250 I traded for to get my Jeep.....which, coincidentaly, is all torn apart

And I have a dream......of building a frame from scratch and topping it with a 'glass CJ-8 tub.....with all the funky tube suspensions them guys on pirate4x4 build all the time

But, I gotta finish this one first, LOL

Just how strong is a tear drop body. You tell me...



And it is not even half put together yet..



I have the roof panels complete. Just want to weather proof the underside of the trailer before I do. That is why the frame is disconnected from the body.

 

I was pleasantly surprised to see the good reviews on plain old roofing compound on the bottom of teardrops.
and now 2 years later, I agree plain old roofing compound does the trick.

 

I think I see a little bowing in there

 

Bottom side of trailer is weather tight.
Body is permenantly mounted to the frame.
Top side is primed and ready for the roof coating when it arrives.

Time to start running eletrical and building the doors and hatches.

 

How did you proof the bottom? Inquiring minds would like to know
