Was it ever/ Is It very popular for people to fabricate their own hardtops from scratch? I've heard at my school that back in the day jeep hardtops were a popular build in the metal shop.

Take a good look at a Kelly top, all bends no curves. If one was good enuff, sure it could be done. The hard part would be the doors.

BTW, plywood would be a No-Go.

Find someone who has built a metal airplane to help/teach you-----fabricating a Jeep top is a piece of cake compared to that.

The skills needed are not that difficult to learn.

One of my long term 'goals' is to get good enough on AL Diamond plate to make a hard top for my jeep that looks like (has the same lines) a soft top. I saw one a guy did down in Pueblo that I would have bought on the spot... it was the cat's meow :)

Not alot of curves except the rear verticle - the slopes on the top it self was made from welded sections of the Diamond Plate.

Here is one a guy in Alaska built out of stainless steel. He did a really nice job. You can read about it on ewillys.com
