Removed valve covers ordered new gaskets, Old ones were black rubber, New ones are cork?? Is cork ok? Also do I need to put any kind of sealent on the gasket before replacing?

One thing that I did that worked well is installing studs in the head then installing the gasket as described above. That way the gasket stays in place.

Thanks guys! Only one problem I washed up old covers and was stripping/down sanding when I realized that the rear top bolt had been tightened so far that it seperated the bolt flange from the remainder of the cover on both sides. Now I guess I have to stitch it back up or see if I can find another set. 304 V8 by the way if you have a set!

304, 360, 401 all the same valve covers. You can also try a WTB on www.ifsja.org or any of the other Jeep boards on the net. You can probably buy new covers from American Parts Depot or similar AMC parts supplier.

Remember that your build date tag is on the right valve cover, so you'll want to transfer that to the new part.

Is it a common occurance for the covers to be overtightened and busted?
