could some one give me a list of gm or any type of steering columns that will fit my 1973 cj5. i just bought it 2 weeks ago and getting a closer look at the column, someone welded a small go cart wheel to the shaft. i would like to put a tilt in also.

Basically nothing will just bolt-in but the factory column.

How much modification are you willing to do? I'd think the easiest donor would be a '76 or newer CJ, since they came with a GM column. Again, it won't just bolt in.

One issue will be how the swinging pedals mount. The steering column is part of the structure that the pedals mount to. You might be able to take pedals and all from a '76 or newer CJ, and make that work fairly easily.

I have not done this mod, since I like the factory "bus wheel." However, many here have. If you want to do this on the cheap with what you can find in the junkyard, I suggest that you make some measurements and take your tape to the yard. An XJ might be another possible donor.

I put a '78 CJ tilt column in the '71. Another option is to source a good rebuilt CJ/GM column from Centechwire.com or Flaming River

Holy cow those are pricey! I had no idea columns cost so much! PickNPull lists them @ $50.98 so that may be the way I have to go

If the column is damaged, you'll have to find a used part from a junkyard or from another Jeep owner. There is no source for a new shaft AFAIK. It may be possible to repair this shaft or machine a new one, but I'd just look for a good used part. The steering wheel is still available new.

Post an ad in the WTB (want to buy) section of the classifieds here. If you tell us what part of the country you are in, there may be a junkyard near you that has one.
