if i buy factory lights and upgrade to a 12volt system later i assume i just have to change bulbs right, not the entire housing. also i figure if i put on a weber 2 barrel carb, header, & elect. ignition ( this is where 12volt decision comes in) i should bump hp about 15 or 20. what do you think? what else can i do? ultimatley i'd like to put a 4cyl. turbo diesel in this but thats a another project for another summer. thanks for advice

Last time I did this, on my '48, I just changed bulbs.
Don't know what the weber will do for you.
Pertronix in the distributor will smooth things out and reduce maintenance.

I think you'd need to change out the fuel and temp gauges in the cluster also, as they are 6v and you may let the magic smoke out of them (or add a voltage reducer). Horn is prolly 6v too, along with all the bulbs in the instrument cluster. This is assuming it's on the '56 in your sig, and was 6v originally. 12v and Pertronix will never get you 15-20 hp IMO, but it'll start and run nicer. Accessories easier to find for 12v too.

Every bulb in the jeep will need to be changed, along with the battery (duh!) and the charging system. This is an excellent time to go with a Delco 10si alternator as well.

For the instrument cluster you will need a voltage drop resistor or you will indeed smoke the fuel gauge. Krage and (shudder) JC Whitless have them for a few bux. If you get this far into the project, a new wiring harness will only run about $120 bux (EZ Wire) and it may save you countless hours trying to exorcise 50+ year-old demons from your elecjuicetical system!
