Gas mileage on a 232?

I just got my latest "project" on the road, a '74 cj5 with the stock 232 I-6 in it.
Fiberglass body, rag top.
I had to a lot of B.S. to get the gas guage to read.
Finally got it to go up and down.
So I run it to 1/2 tank, fill it. WOW it works.
I got to adding # together and the jeep is getting like 19mpg??
Can that be??
I was thinking it should get MAYBE 12-15.
That 3 includes was running to work one day with the transfer case in 4 wheel to "swish the oil about" to see if I had any leaks (hubs unlocked), idling away, generally fooling @ with it.
What's everyone getting on thier stock ma-chines?

As long as I drive a old jeep I'll never retain a kidney stone! They'll rattle out as I'm bouncing down the road!

 

Possible ... with the right driving habits and the right terrain.

Also, the smaller the number of gallons you run through it to measure the mileage, the larger the measurement error will be. Different gas pumps will shut off at different levels, etc. Would also be worthwhile to calibrate your odometer - I think you can do that with a GPS (though I don't know - not owning one). Tire size will matter.

 

yup I average 20 to 22 232 all stock glass tub....

 

Road test from 74 says 18.3-20.6 HWY Mpg

 

wow that thing cost 800 dollars more new than i paid used.....
