I have removed the flywheel from my '62 F-head because I am replacing the clutch and want to have it resurfaced before I reassemble. The manual says that two of the six fasteners should be special tapered bolts. Instead, I have two coarse threaded bolts that fit loosely in their holes. The other four bolts have fine threads and seem to be right. Two holes in the flywheel (opposite each other) are larger and are tapered. If I'm not mistaken, for the bolts to be changed, the crank would have to be removed from the engine. As far as I know, the previous owner never had the engine apart. Has anyone experienced flywheels without the tapered bolts? Should I worry about it? Can the tapered bolts be obtained and can they be put in without removing the crank (which I definitely will not be doing)?

I could have sworn (which I do quite frequently, anyway) that the bolts come from the transmission side of the flywheel.

If yours are coming from the engine side, I would say some one has had that engine apart at one time or another.

AFAIK, you're right. You can only replace the bolts if you drop the crank. I would try and source the correct bolts.
