Power Brakes

    I been re-working my 66 CJ-5 that I have owned for 30 years, and every 5 years or so get the bug for some new modifications. :cry: This 1/2 decade it is a Warn floater kit, a new top, and FINALLY doing something about my brakes.
    I am installing a set a Wagoneer 10" drilled drum rear brakes and some 11" front brakes.

    I was about to pop for $200 for a 7" dual power brake setup when my mind engaged :) ....( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...&rd=1&item=7929263420&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT ) What about when I am on that super steep hill and I stall???? No engine, No vaccuum, where did my brakes go?? I just hate it when that happens, and after 30 years with this jeep, everything has happened except rolling multiple times down a hill.

    I would be intrested in hearing about anybody's thoughts on vaccuum boosted brakes and running amuck in the hills?

    I would pass and swap for disc brakes instead.

    My just my 2 cents.

    Your brakes will still work, you will just have to press harder on the pedal is all. It's vacuum assist, not vacuum operated brakes. ;)

    That what they say, just vaccuum assisted, HOWEVER, there was this time whem I parked a Ford 4X4 pick-up truck with a trailer and 6 horses on a hill. the pin in the automatic Xmision decided to brake (bad chice of words,,,,) Fail, and I jumped in as the truck started down the hill, It had power brakes, and even with me jack-knifed between the seat and both feet on the brake pedal, I just kept going faster. Didn't stear worth a darn with the engine stopped either. Finally I grabbed the key and started the motor and got the whole wretched mess stopped...... :oops:

    This what triggered these old brain cells about stalling and engine on a hill....

    Maybe a light jeep would not be too bad, and I can always remove the booster and just plumb the master cyclinder direct if it does not work....

    I run 11" Drums all around on all the jeeps... They will plant your nose on the windshield if you want and have never found them wanting in stopping or holding power.

    Warloch,

    Are you still using the stock master cylinder?

    After all these years of putting up with 9" brakes I just want to fix it one last time....

    In my limited experience of having an engine stall and trying to stop I've found brakes being almost non existent if they're supposed to be power brakes.

    Sol - Yup on two of them still have the original MC... Slowly converting to Dual MC's (got two in the box from Herm for the winter work). They have worked fine for years. Going to the dual for safty reasons (hung a line up on a river crossing and lost all my brakes... fun 15 mile drive home... Kept using trees as brakes :shock: )

    Most power boosters have a check valve in them, so even if you stall on a hill (which I have), there is usually enough residual in the booster for a one time shot, which would allow you to get it restarted. It all boils down to personal peference I guess. I drive more street than offroad, so I like having good brakes (especially with these crazy California drivers) :shock:

    After "CAREFUL" concideration, today, I ordered a firewall mounted brake pedal with (2) 7/8" master cyclinderes. This will allow me to set the bias from front to rear, and change it if I don't like it, and with the smaller master brake cyclinder should increase my brake pressure. The pedal was also a 6.5 ratio pedal.

    I really thank all of you for the inputs, It's a great group to be associated with.

    If anybody has a locker for a Dana 27 front end email me. As this will be my next project once the floater/brakes and rear locker is installed.

    There is a GM product out there, I think off 3/4 or 1 ton trucks that will hold 1 extra boost for when the vehicle might stall. There are also aftermarket products that do the same.

    I used a manual master and mounted a remote vacumn booster and an electric vacumn pump. The booster can be mounted in the cab if you don't mind the "ugly" I mounted the thing off the crossmember just behind rear axle. Probably would not work with rear tank. I don't think it hurts departure angles but could be knocked off with major wheeling. There is no sickening loss of brakes with engine nor electric off. Booster just does what the name implies.....boosts. AM
