This may be a stupid question, but I am trying to fix my steering issues with a bellcrank repair kit. My issue is that I can't figure out how to remove the old bearings from the bellcrank. I have the bolt and everything else out, but the needle bearings and rubber o-rings seem to be pretty stubborn. Any help would be appreciated.

you dont have a press? if not you could rig up threaded rod / pipe & pull them into the pipe. i would take the whole mess to a press. remember that when you press new caged needle bearings that you press from the end that has the info stamped on them. only one side of a needle bearing is hardend & that is it. i personaly don't install the bottom seal, they dont fit right anyway, but that's just me. it spreads the bearings just a little bit further apart for a frog hair more stability.

Do lots of people have presses? I'm just trying to do this in my limited space garage. I still have the bellecrank itself on the vehicle. I'm just trying to get the rebuild kit in there.

Those that do not have a press rely on their local auto parts store (that does machine work) or automotive machine shop. Pressing bearings is a common job for them.

So I really need to remove the bellcrank itself to get at those bearings?

    What does the manual say?

The manual doesn't have any information. Under troubleshooting it lists the steering bellcrank as a possibility and says to replace it.

yes the bell crank has to be removed to rebuild it.

I removed my steering bellcrank last week and both of the roller bearings slid right off, possibly because they were so worn. The service manual has detailed information under the steering section and I also found some good information in the search section and on the CJ-3B page.

On a side note I orderd the bellcrank repair kit from Kaiser Willy's and it was missing the bearings. That did not make me happy this morning when I opened the box so I could re-instal the bellcrank.

    Sienacoach,
I was just looking at the Kaiser Willy's web site and it should have included the bearings, just in case you were wondering. Now I just need to get motivation to get back out to the garage in the heat.

That was the first thing I checked. To see if I screwed up and needed to order them seperatly or if they were included and just not in the box. They should have been in the box with the other parts. I will call them first thing in the morning, they are pretty good and I don't expect a problem from them.
