happy 4th from afghanistan. a few questions guys. if you do a home made full floater on the rear, are there drive flanges available if you dont use locking hubs? i realize custom axles are in order, so could they be made with outboard splines to fit stock front drive flanges? ok now for stupid question of the year. (will i win a prize?) will the rear d18 mount pto work with the o/d unit? i think i already know answer, but i'm bored over here. i have a tulsa pto winch of a scout 800 i would like to use, but want the o/d also. yall finish your ribs before you answer, i ain't in no hurry. thanks!

If you go 27 splines on the outer ends of the axles you can use Dana 30 drive flanges which will bolt right up to a FF kit if using CJ bearing hubs.
A Warn Overdrive can be used with a PTO unit. There is a special adapter housing and drive gear that bolts to the back side of the PTO unit. Hermtheoverdriveguy is manufacturing these as they are no longer available from other sources unless you find used. The Spicer 18h rear output pto is cast steel and heavy so if you go this route I'd suggest some sort or support/mount for it or you may face cracking/breaking of the adapter unit or the overdrive body itself.

hey thanks a lot! never would have dreamed i could stack the o/d & pto on top of each other. i will check w/ herm on that. ok another question, but this one ain't so stupid. when i o/h my last scout rear d/44 i went to purchase axle bearings. it had the std timkin tapered roller cone/cup/shim setup. i could not cross the #s back to what i had, instead the parts house gave me what i will describe as a "unit" type of bearing assy, lets say the same type as a 9" ford rear axle would take. pressed on w/ a retaing ring. is this style of bearing available for the old jeep 44 also? it looks like it would be much better, no shims, no preload to worry about, no slack from wear, etc. when i get home i can furnish a part# since they are still in the box. ok one more question. will the drum / disc setups from a scout 2 work on our old jeeps? 44 rear & 30 front.
thanks again & sorry, but no work today.

The Scout 2 disc brakes can work on a Jeep Dana 30 but you must redrill the knuckles for the 8 studs of the Scout 2 spindle and caliper bracket or redrill the Scout stuff to match the Jeep.
Scout 2 Dana 44 rear drum brakes will not fit a Jeep housing. Offset of the backing plate is different, center hole of the drum is too small, and there are other differences.
If it is an Early Scout with 11"x2" brakes on the front then those can be used on Jeeps.

Regarding the axle bearing, if you have a tapered axle you must use the cone type bearing so axle endplay can be set. There is no bearing that eliminates this which is why it's so difficult to convert a tapered axle to a flanged axle. The housing ends are different between the tapered axle housing and flanged axle housing.
If a flanged axle either will work. My experience has been the tapered bearing lasts longer than the ball roller type of bearing.
