i got my differentials done and put all the upgrade stuff on but i have about a quarter inch space between the backing plate and the drum. the lip on the drum is sitting back enough inside the backing plate to work, its inside the plate but im wondering if the plate needs shimmed out another 1/8" or so. what do you guys think

As long as the shoes are making full contact with the inside of the drum don't worry about it. Shimming of the axle bearings, manufacturing tolerances, etc. could account for the gap.

I noticed the very same thing tonight on my 11" drum conversion on my front axle (D27) My drum is just inside the backing plate but must the relief cut on the drum is exposed.
