Gonna try to get all the info I can to yall. I have a 73 cj5 with a 1979 AMC 360 has a 2 barrel carb. If I push on the gas to fast the engine dies. I have to touch it real sloe to get to rev up. Any ideas to fix this or is this common. Where do I find a model number on the carb it self.

Power valve, or the accelerator pump. More likely the power valve is bad. Carb kit has both parts.

The carb will have a tag under one of the bowl screws if you are lucky - often they are missing. If you know exactly what vehicle the engine came out of, I can probably find a number for you out of the parts book. The number will be a guess, but should work ok.

I was told it came from a 79 AMC ambassador.

Oh. Sorry, I only have a book for Jeeps.

AMC did not make an Ambassador in 1979. Last year for the Ambassador was 1974 according to my online sources.

    No tag?

Motorcraft 2100 2-barrel. Possibly of Ford origin. I don't recall seeing that type of bowl vent on the AMC carbs. The fuel filter is Ford-ish too. This one is from a '70s Ford van with a 302 or 351 - from my junk box:

If you ask for a rebiuld kit, make sure the top cover gasket from the kit matches your carb, before you open the package. The packages usually have clear plastic shrink wrap over the parts, so you can see what's in the kit without opening it. Open it, and you bought it.

I have a question, this carb seems to messed up. I've been looking at other carbs and there seems to be something missing. The flap at the top seems to be always stuck open, is the common or suppose to be this way. There is nothing connected to the arm that is attached to the flap.

The flap at the top is the choke. You are missing all of the parts on the side (where it says "nothing here") that activate the choke.

The TSM will tell you a lot about your Jeep. There is an entire chapter on the carburetors. Here's the link http://oljeep.com/gw/74_tsm/4-FuelCarburetion.pdf (the link is misspelled on the page listing the chapters, but it's there).

Another Motorcraft 2100. They are good carburetors - simple, and work well on the trail. There's a guy on eBay that sells them, ready to go. Or you can find one at a junkyard.

I may have enough pieces to make that carburetor work, if you include a manual choke kit from the parts store.

Yeah, that's probably a Dorman kit. http://www.dormanproducts.com/search.aspx?SearchTerm=manual+choke It replaces the thermostatic part of the choke that is missing, replacing it with the old-fashioned cable-pull choke. It's not enough in itself - you'll still need some linkage pieces.

You can get the choke conversion at your local parts store. Dorman also packages this item for sale off a peg as part of the "Help!" line. With shipping, it'll be cheaper to get it locally.

Send me a PM - I might be able to help you.

Otherwise, you'd need to take them off of a carb from the junk yard. When I was in CA a few years ago, I had no trouble finding Fords with 2100s. Not many in the yards in MA though, but still possible.
