Can I mount the 5.38 gears and carriers from an early CJ Dana 44 in later Waggy 44 front and rears? I realize the early carriers would have 19 spline axles where as the Waggy 44's are 30 spline. Can I use the spider gears from the Waggy carriers in the early carriers or even switch to say an Aussie Locker for the 30 splines?

I would think you could use Aussies or the Waggy side/spiders. If you even needed to change the carrier. What gears are in the Waggy? You will be losing the fine spline on the pinion shaft too most likely. My 5.38 from my A1 were 10 spline also, so I had to buy a new yoke in addition to the gears.

You cannot interchange 30 spline and 19/10 spline side gears from one open CASE to another CASE with different spline count. In other words, 30 spline side gears won't fit in a 19/10 spline CASE or vice verse. The machined journal on the gear is a different size from one to the other. If you are going to use 30 spline side gears you need a 30 spline case. The exception to this rule is the Powerlock. Those you can interchange side gears.

It's possible you may be able to have a special set of side gears for an Aussie or Lock-right broached but that would be money if they would be willing to do it.

Nick seems to be the authority! You shouldn't have any trouble getting open 44 cases I wouldn't think. You should be able to buy new TrakLoks for $200 apiece if you shop around.

O.K. I picked up the Waggy front axle today. It's out of a '77 Cherokee Chief. It had Quadratrac so I didn't get the rear. After Nicks post I checked out some carriers online. I do have a carrier from a '73 CJ D44 that had 4.27 gears so I think I can use that and buy one new carrier, maybe a used Powerlok if I can find one. Looks like I'll be using some Ford rotors to get it to 5 lug. I might run a Scout II rear.
