Hello-Long time reader first time poster. Bought a 74CJ5 from orig owner and its in pretty good shape. Replaced gas tank, rear leafs and distributor and she purrs (when idling). First question: when I put it in 4wd Hi it makes a good amount of noise when driving and feels like I'm pulling an airplane. Unfortunately, I first tried it on the road, but it doesn't seem like that was it although, after reading many posts, I know it wasn't a good idea. 4wd lo is better but still tough. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

don't drive it in 4wd on dry pavement?

what's your question, since your "first question" wasn't? noise? could be a lot of things. you'll need to narrow it down a bit.

Sorry for being so vague...pretty new at this. I'm not really mechanically inclined, but I know a little bit. Essentially, the 4wd seems to work (I can engage it and can move forward), but in 4wd Hi it sounds loud and its really working hard to move...kinda like I'm hitched up to a root and I'm trying to pull it out. 4 lo sounds better and its a little easier to move, but still rough. But, like I said, it was on pavement (if that matters).

If your hubs are in the free position and your transfer case is in 4wd, does it still make the noise?
You might also check if both diffs are the same ratio, this can cause similar problems.

Take it out on a dirt road and try it. On pavement, no worky. Also check your tire size to be sure they are all the same diameter and same tire pressure. Any 4wd will act the way you are describing on dry pavement while in 4wd.

Thanks for the insight. I'll give it a try off pavement and see if it changes.

I would have to agree on the diff ratio's not being the same. If you are going in a straight line weather on pavement or not, it should roll just fine since front and rear axles are moving the same speed, just dont turn on pavement while locked in. If your front or rear axle has a lower gear ratio then the other one, then you will be pulling/pushing that axle since the other axle will have taller (higher gear ratio) gears and will be trying to pull the other one.

My vote would be different tire size front and rear. I did that last winter with my F-350 and I thought it would explode on snowy pavement. I put matching tires on it and it works fine. If it is hard to get out of 4WD after you run it forward till you back up, it may be tire size or front-rear axles different ratio. When they don't match, you have to "unwind" the tension sometimes before the transfer case will release.
