I have a 1963 CJ 5 with the orignal F head and 4 speed tranny. I came across a newer cj 5 late 60,s with a factory V6 and 3 speed. I would like to pull the V6 and install in my 63. I was wondering if the V6 3 speed bell housing well match up to the 4 speed. Both tranny's are factory. Maybe someone out there has done this swap. Thanks

First I have not done the swap but have been collecting parts for a while to do it.

This is what I can tell you from my parts hunting. You will need an adapter plate that goes between the transmission and belhousing and probably a different belhousing at least. When they went to the T14 transmission behind the V6 they used a longer aluminum belhousing that eliminated the spacer used with the T86. There are alot of the BOP (Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac) belhousings out there if you search for them. Try to find one that the transmission input shaft hole is the same size as the bearing retainer and adapter plate on your T98. If you do the swap becareful not to damage the front bearing retainer on that T98. They don't sell a replacement and you can't find one used, I know I have been looking and still haven't found one.:(

If you want pics of the adapter and belhousing let me know and i'll take a few.

Thank you dortoh. Sounds like it has a few snags but can be done. I probly should go ahead a buy the newer cj and plan the swap down the road. I was hoping on a quick fix. LOL. I need to get the 63 running asap as it is needed on the farm. It is a working CJ, and only gets to play come hunting season. I will have to look at the F head to see what is ailing it and see if I can do a patch job. Thanks again and good luck
