Yes, 55-75 will all interchange. 76-83 has a different windshield.

I have noticed alot when looking at parts that the '5s change in '76. Is that all that changed...the windshield? Well and the side moldings of course. I noticed they did go to straight side panels on them as well.

    Almost everything changes in 1976.

If you're asking about just the tops, yes only the windshield changed. The newer windshield tilts back more, and tapers in toward the top (the glass is shaped differently, more like a trapezoid than earlier rectangular glass). The outline of the body stayed the same. Jeep retained the outward appearance of the CJ-5, but changed most everything else.

The bow pockets went away, if that's what you mean by straight sides. That was a vestigial feature from the M38A1.

does the old metal hardtop for a 68 cj5 require a clip on the windshield or is it the same clip you use for a bikini top???

Most hardtops screw into the windshield frame itself. The channel on the frame that you use for a soft top or bikini top is not used by the hardtop, other than to locate where it sits on the w/s frame.
