Windscreen frame rust protection?

    Hi all.
I'm busy with the restoration off my "split type" windscreen.
As this is a box type frame, I would like to clean and protect the inside from rust.
Has anybody done this, and what product did you use?
I don't want to take a chance on galvanizing, as these windscreen frames are scarce in South Africa.

    Any suggestions will be appreciated!

I read a while back about some guy in Norway who used wax rings that seal a toilet bowl to the stand pipe. He would melt it with some coal oil/diesel fuel and spray the underside of his vehicles with a garden type sprayer for salt protection. A similar store bought product is used on the inside of high dollar bicycle frames. On the windshield frame you might be able to tape up the holes and pour it in and slosh it around. Depending on the climate you would probably use less solvent then the fellow in Norway.

If the inside is already rusted, why not just plug up every hole that you can and pour in some rust converter like Ospho or whatever you can get locally.

Be advised that some paints are not compatible with some rust converters, which is why I suggest closing off every hole possible. In case you have to pain the external frame later.

I used Waxoyl. The european guys swear by it. I got it over the web but I think there was only one supplier. Do a search, you should find it.:v6:

    Thanks guys.
I might even try to get some pool acid in there to try and clean most of the rust first? I had a look with a torch, and the rust is not too bad on the inside.
I can get hold of a rust converter localy, so I will block off the holes, and flood the inside of the frame with that.

    Cheers!

    with that.

I have had good luck with acid based rust converter called extend. pretty much any hardware store still carries it. As fas as acid treatment i have best luck with either nitric and muriatic/hydrochloric acids neutralized with ammonia (floor cleaner) or small amounts of sodium hydroxide ( found locally as lye based drain cleaners or in HD degreasing agents such as Castrol super clean
