don't think it's possible, you need the hub off to slide the axle w/ the bearing out....least wise that's what I remember

By this I guess you mean you have a Dana 44 axle in your 1966 CJ.

Short answer is no, I don't think it is possible to get the axles out without removing the hubs. Without removing the brake drums you cannot get to both sides of the bolt/nut assembly that holds the wheel bearing assembly into the axle tubes. The brake drums are assembled to the hubs by the wheel lug studs, so the drum isn't going to come off without the hub in most cases.

A quick search on the site for "hub puller" will turn up many threads on this subject. A "real" hub puller is the way to go! HTH. ;)

Just wondering, never been into one but, I was under the impression that all that held the axle in was the brake backing plate.

The same bolts that hold the backing plate in place also hold the axle bearing retainer. The nuts are on the backside of the axle and easily reachable, but the heads of those same bolts are inside the brake drum.

If your brakes has the screws that hold the drum to the outside of the flange or they slip on from the outside then it is possible. You have to remove the brake shoes and hardware then you can get in there with a wrench. Not easy but do-able. Much easier to pull the hub. If the drum is on the back side of the hub/flange then you must pull it.

Thanks guys, turns out the hubs were,nt near what the horror stories made them out to be. A borrowed puller from the garage up the road and a 1/2 inch drive impact and they jumped off. Thanks for the help

glad you found a puller. just to let you know, when i first got my jeep i pulled the axles without taking the hubs, really not that hard but much cleaner to be able to pull the hubs off.

It may be possible, never underestimate the power of brute force coupled with stupidity.

But if you want to use the parts again, well that may be another story.
