When i stop sometimes at a light or stop sign and downshift form 2nd or 3rd into 1st I end up grinding 1st gear a bit. It seems like the shaft and gears are still spinning too quickly. Sometimes even after ive been sitting at idle for a while the shift from neutral into 1st grinds a little until it pops into gear. I think this just has to do with excessive play in the clutch linkage? Obviously its non-syncro first

Adjust clutch pedal free-play for about 3/4 to 1-1/4 inch and that should dis-engage the transmission from the flywheel. However if the pilot bushing is tight it will somewhat continue to spin the transmission causing gear grind in first (it's non-syncro) so when coming to a complete stop you leave the trans in gear (2nd or 3rd) and quickly shift to 1st. Having it in gear with the clutch in at dead stop will stop transmission rotation of gears.

As a temporary fix you can just leave it in second until you stop and then slip it into first or if you are already stopped, put it in second or third first(syncroed) and when you're ready to go, put it in first. At least that way you wont knock off all the first gear teeth.

I did notice that I could use 2nd and 3rd to slow it down when i come to a complete stop and shift into 1st. So ill adjust the linkage and <shift faster> lol. I just got it on the road so ive been procrastinating getting dirty again after 5+ years of rebuilding. thanks for the input.

The mechanics manual says to leave 3/4 of an inch play.
