Today I picked up a gas tank that came out of 78 CJ5 and looks to be a custom tank. I think it will bolt up to my frame.

I plan on cutting four to five inches of the fill tube off and going vertical through the rear floor of my Jeep with it. I still have the old tank and plan on whacking the fill neck off of that one and clamping it to the hose attachment and mount it above the floor.

Any tips or comments to add on to this would be awesome.

how heavy gauge is it?....my only concern would be not having a skid to protect it from trail damage

It is pretty thick, that thing weighs close to 40 pounds Jim and it mounts up high in the body cavity.

Watch your pumkin and compression. I already mashed one tank when I went with softer shocks. Put a nice split right up the front of the tank.

My rear cross member will not allow me to install this underneath the Jeep so I am turning it into a fuel cell behind the seat. I will be mounting it to the frame with 3/8 all thread rod.

When I removed the sending unit the float was leaking( fuel was swishing inside it ) and the filter were shot and covered with rust, but covered in rust is my Jeep's middle name.

It looks like an old Conn-Ferr but your filler neck seems to be modified. I had one on my old '81, heavy gauge sheet and you could get a bash plate to go with it.:)
