I have a'75 CJ5 and an admitted newby when it comes to indepth mechanical fixes. I need some advice on what to look for on this repair. This just happened this weekend and I haven't gotten to take it apart yet, but when I turned the hubs and shifted to 4-wheel, the front end started crunching and popping. I shifted back out and noticed the front drive shaft pushed back about 1/4-inch out of the diff housing and it wobbles quite a bit by hand. The horrendous noise occurs when the hubs are locked, regardless of transfer case position. What am I looking for here?

time to pull the front differential cover off
be prepared to catch the pieces...
spiders and/or ring and pinion damaged

From your description of the noises and differential pinion moving in and out of the differential case, you've got big trouble.

Is there any oil in the front axle? I would remove the cover from the front axle and look inside. Put the wheels up off the ground and turn the driveshaft by hand, TC in neutral and hubs unlocked. I expect you will see the problem.
