Can one remove the interlock "pill" from the t18 transfer case without much difficulty? How many access plates, how much disassembly is required to remove the pill that keeps me out of two-wheel drive low range.

Technically I have the aptitude to figure it out, physically I can't afford to get too involved. I'm trying to decide if I should attempt it, or, leave it to the shop that does all my work.

Transfer case needs to come completely apart. Good time for a thorough rebuild. If you can't afford the down time or to get too involved then wait. They are not too hard to do though.

    Thank-you nickmil.

How much trouble would I be in if I ran it in four-wheel-drive, low range, but didn't engage the front locking hubs? You know, apply power to the front end and the assembly just spins. Sort of like locking the front hubs once a month and driving in two wheel drive to keep the system limbered up.

Darling bride cannot drive a clutch and I thought it was a good way to start her. She can practice letting out the clutch, with the vehicle at idle. When she's got it smooth, we have her start applying gas to make the take off faster then move to high range.

Yup, no problem there. Good way to start someone out. Just realize the front axle gears will still be turning but as long as fuel economy and front end wear is not an issue then no problem.
