I'm not too versed on axles and their technicalities, so maybe someone can help me out. I've got a 66 CJ5 and just noticed that the rear tire seem to have roughly 1/16" thrust. Meaning I can move them in and out by hand. How much thrust are they supposed to have? and can you adjust them like trailer bearings using the axle nut. I can't find my Hayne's book to look it up. Just need to know the precedure for adjustment if any is needed, Thanks.

That usually indicates your split axle didn't have the keyway nut installed properly. I don't recall there being any thrust if done right.

You need to get a FSM - I don't remember the list to find them off hand, look in the vendors listing for ideas - or someone will give you a link.

I can't remember how much end play they are suppose to have, but a sixteenth of an inch is way to much end play. Bearings may be worn out.

most will use shims and thick metal retainers behind the backing plate to adjust axle shaft endplay at .001" to .006".
Some are shimmed on only one side, but have seen shims on both sides.
As mentioned, you could have hub and/or another problem so inspect closely before teardown.

Another possibility is the spacer in the differential being busted, but we'll hope it's not that.
