Meyers Hard Top - Should I Sell?

In preperation for the body work, I started pulling the Meyers top off of my '74 CJ-6 and am not sure what to do with it. I had always planned on running a soft top once I get the body work done. Also, the hard top has about a million little fasteners holding it on, with many of them in areas that normaly wouldn't have holes, like the windshield frame.

So, seeing what it takes to get the thing off, I can't imagine this being a regular thing for me. But, I realize they're fairly rare, so I'm tempted to hold on to it "just in case." Honestly, I think it's a cool top, but not that fun to ride in. It's kind of like sitting in a drum (really loud), really hot in the summer, really cold in the winter. But, I dig the roll down windows and the fact that I can see through the glass.

If I choose to sell, is there a market for it? Enough value to help pay for the soft top?

    Anyways, just looking for opinions...

    Thanks!

Some folks will pay big bucks for a nice hard top. If it were mine, I'd get rid of it..

there would definitely be a market for it.....I sold my in the classifieds here a couple years ago..........you could break it down and cover it on a pallet for future use as well. Some folks really like the hard top and I thought hard about insulating mine for sound and temp retention

Just a thought, peruse the classifieds here now and then, and ebay, craigs list, etc., and see what they go for.

Forgot to subscribe to the thread, so I just saw the responses now...

Good idea checking the classifieds to see what they're going for.

Patrick - Thanks for the photo! All the pictures I have of it were on my old computer when it took a dump on me! I started a build thread a while back, but the pictures that I put up no longer show up.

The picture you posted is the same top I have. There is a difference...the original owner of my Jeep added a window in the "extra" section in the middle, so instead of one window on each side, I have two windows so visibility is quite good. Also, the shop he took it to did a great job matching the existing window with regard to sizing and placement so it doesn't look like an afterthought. Rather, it looks like it came new that way.

That explains why I couldn't find a pic of one just like yours on the net. That added window really makes the top look better IMO.

I hear you about all the fasteners - not something you're going to put on and take off more than once or twice. Plus the weight up high affects the handling of the Jeep a lot. Not dangerous, but different ... your Jeep will feel more stable and nimble without it.

Demand for a CJ-6 hard top is quite limited. The shipping costs will usually limit the market to a local sale. However, there may be somebody out there that really wants it, and is willing to pay the costs to ship it home.

You have a place to keep it? I'd put it away in case I sold the Jeep and the new owner wanted it. If the paint is good, I'd expect you could store it outdoors in a dry climate like NM and it would not deteriorate much. Maybe wax it and armorall the rubber, and keep it off the ground and protected from the sun by a tarp or something. My guess is that the new owner would take it, though they might regret it later, and to some buyers it would be a real plus.

Ok, it's been two days, and still haven't got it off!! Granted, I've only got a short amount of time in the effort due to lack of daylight, work, kids wrestling practice, etc. Still though, much harder than I thought:

    * No rusted fasteners! Big surprise...but wait for it.
    * Turns out that silicone is a great rust preventer! It was placed on every nut/bolt, and everywhere the body and top meet!! Oh, it also holds on a top pretty well too. Main reason the top isn't off yet. Should be able to finish up when I get home tonight.
    * Roll bar doesn't help either. Gotta get it out to get to some of the nuts, but can't get roll bar out with top (roof) on. Top still stuck with silicone!!

Bottom line - Probably gonna sell it. Don't see myself doing this on a regular basis.

Silicone was a bad idea. Silicone is a very effective adhesive, as you discovered. If you can cut the silicone between the body and the cab, that will help. The factory sealant was rope caulk, which is a beige putty that comes in rolls. Fills the gaps but does not act as an adhesive.

You can take the top off in pieces - you're supposed to assemble it and set it on the body, but I've built it up in place a few times. You kind of have to if you are working by yourself with a CJ-6 top. With all three doors off, take the lid loose and stand up in the body to lift it from the sides. Then remove each side. It's going to be tough to try and lift the whole top when it's stuck down with glue.

Ok...it's official, I'm gonna try to sell it. Will post in the for sale section....

I'm a big fan of the steel hardtops, its one of those personal preferance things. By the way the factory did offer windows in the extension panels as an option. I have one NOS CJ6 extension panel with the window opening.
