We're going on and on about how you should swap in a granny box and you have already been there and are going back the other way. That's pretty sweet, bring the challenge back to the trail by getting closer to stock. Keep up the good work, we're enjoying the thread.:JEEP:

Right on, sounds good. Sounds like it will be a very stout and simple rig by the time she is finished. Plus that jeep will be able to get you into plenty of trouble being locked front and rear. What springs are you using for it?

I got ideas on what i'm doing, sometimes it's just a few of the parts I'll ahve questions on. I'm just looking for additional input, trust me, I'll be the first to admit I don't know everything, and as much input as I can get the better. A lot of what we do is based on our own personal seat of the pants feel. Like the all time debate over manual transmission vs automatics. That will never be settled, it all comes down to personal preference. Kind of like the reason I painted my transmission yellow and orange, I wanted some color, and I didn't go with pink with purple polka dots cuz it's not an automatic......

Nicely put. With the interior, are you going back original or with a twist of new age?

I got half a mind to pick up a tube bender, and make some older styled seats and cover the padding with either Mexican / Western themed blanket. My sister is a Home-Econ teacher so she's a good seamstress. In casethat falls thru I have a set of tan Levi seats that I'll recover.

Ya I wouldn't sport a shirt made of that material, but I will say it makes for good seat covering especially in a jeep. Nice retro look to it.

Got a question: Since I got a godo Meyer hard top, I'm contemplating mounted the spare on top of the hard top. I'd like to keep the rear free of a tire carrier, and I don't want to side mount the spare.

I figure I'd use a factory side mount piece and mounted that to the steel hard top, prolly use a plate to distribute the load. With the wider axles I'm not too concerned about adding to the top heaviness.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

Sounds to me like it would work out alright. You say you are sticking to 32" tires correct? give or take an inch? So you will be wide and low and I dont think the little bit of extra weigh will really hurt you at all. Be a nifty look to the restore I think.

probably be OK, but I still hate that much weight on top....especially since your using the steel hardtop. How about mounting to the hood, ala the old Rovers???

Ooooo, thats a good idea. Plus it would make for changing a tire a hole lot easier.

That doesn't do much for your view over the hood though. I think the Rover's actually had the hood recessed a bit for the tire.

Well that would depend on how wide your spare was really. It will take up some vision reguardless but you get you one of those little 6" wide old school type tires and you should be ok.

Recessing it into the hood has been an idea of mine on a CJ for years. I got a spare / second hood. Any idea of how much clearance is between the air box on an F-head the the hood. Wonder how far I cound sink the tire into the hood, and still clearance everything...... All I need is an HVAC guy to mock me up a sheetmetal circle with some sides.....

not sure on clearance but if you centered the wheel over the carb the rim wouldn't need to sink as far as the tire
seems like you could raise the hood and gently lay the tire on top of the motor....take measurements using the cowl as a reference point

Got some cage work done today:

And yes, with a soft top putting that up and down would be difficult, but with the hard top this will tuck up in there quite nicely. At least got part of the family side down. And yes, I will tie that into the frame. Gotta pick up a front hoop and some spreader bars for the front.

Well got things better arranged in the barn. Soon as i geet my pedals and the linkage set up, I'll be dropping the body back on the frame, and figuring out the mounting points and making attachments. Got the hard top apart and primed, made so, me pretty butch (rough) looking corner guards, and did a few other odds and ends. Picked up Novak's billet D20 oil pain for a little bling.
