Does anyone have any part numbers of speedometer cables they have put on their early cj's? I have a 1964 cj5 and am looking at the part number ca3002 from O'reilly. any info would be great, thanks!

I don't have the partr # off hand, but I just replace my missing unit.
I got the cable and housing from 'Kiaser Willys Auto Supply LLC"
    (888-648-4923) or KaiserWillys.com.
If you have the housing intact, you can buy a universal cable at a auto parts place and make your own. I've done this a few times in the past and it's worked well.
    Just a thought

Jeese, I thought it was a good idea. Think the wife will notice the burn marks on the walls? It was cool when the fire blew the door off the hinges though!

If the cable core is broken but the sheath is ok, you can buy a universal replacement core. Standard used to sell them, but I expect you can get one now from Dorman or off the HELP! rack.

The new core is cut to length and a fitting is staked on to the cut end. The kit comes with a staking tool.

About the only mistakes you can make are not to lube the new core, or to cut the core too short or too long.

<eidt> Oops - repeating what Joe suggested. Oh well - hope the extra info is helpful.

You can just replace the core as suggested. If the sheath is questionable though, I'd belly up to the $15 or $20 for a whole unit. IMO.

Thanks for the info guys....I work for O'Reilly Auto Parts so I was looking at their Pioneer products. However, I am not against going through Kaiser or whom ever to get the correct cable because I do not have a "core" to rebuild or to make my own.

In this case "core" means the speedometer cable. The cable itself, without the sheath, or housing.

The speedo cable is in two parts, the inner part that turns (the core) and the outer part which covers the core and screws to the speedo head and the transfer case (the sheath). If you have the sheath, you can replace the core with a universal kit. If you've got nothing (ie the sheath was cut at the transfer case), you'll need the entire "speedometer cable" which includes the sheath and the core.

In most cases, the core breaks and you can replace it by itself.

When you get your new one (speedo cable assy) it will come with light oil coating only. You will need to put some lube on the core. I use vasaleen (sp) and it works well.
