I am off for several days over Christmas and New Years, and am trying to decide if I should try to tackle the rebuild of my T-98 myself. I have a rebuild kit from Novak, along with their instructions, an original shop manual, plus a number of other books etc. My shop is pretty well supplied with tools, compressor etc, but I do not have a hydraulic press. For some reason I am fearful of opening the tranny up and tackling this myself. The idea of looking at all those gears, and all the other parts gives me pause.

I successfully rebuilt the F Head, but I had the machining professionally done. My question is, is the rebuild using the kit all that hard? I can get access to a hydraulic press if I need to use one, and I would get the case cleaned using a friends professional parts cleaning cabinet. I'd like to try and do this myself, but I'd hate to screw it up and have to either order another rebuild kit, or send it out in a basket to have it put back together after screwing it up.

While I am on this subject, I want to rebuid the X-Fer case as well. I have seen several threads on that and at some point I thought I had seen that someone actually made a video about how to rebuild the X-Fer case. I am a visual person and if there is a video out there that I could purchase or borrow to help with the X-Fer case rebuild it would help me a lot.

Thanks for any sage advice any of you can offer. Merry Christmas. :coffee:

You'll be fine, and if it's like a t-18, you won't need a press. get a nice clean space and lay everything out in order as you take it out. then replace all the sincros and inspect the gears for ware as you reassemble. You should be able to tackle the dana 18 as well. Good luck! feel free to give me a call if you need advice.

I would suggest doing the transfer case first. It is quite a bit easier and will give a sense of whether you want to tackle the trans. Transmission parts are sometimes hard to tell how much wear is too much and when the hardparts need to be replaced vs. it'll work.
