I searched for a thread on this and did not see one. A friend has a 79 cj-7 with a v-6 and 4 speed transmission that ineeds an engine. He just bought a 360 out of a FSJ and wants to swap. Will the V-6 bellhousing work? Hw about clutch - linkage-motor mounts - flywheel? Someone told him it was an exact swap - never seems to be.

V6? Do you mean the inline 6?

The engine will bolt to the bellhousing, but the frame towers (engine mounts) are different.

He said it was a v-6. I have not seen it. I thought that series had an inline 6.

Tim, what exactly is different? Is it the frame side of the mounts or the motor side of the mounts?

FOr that matter, I would assume AMC standardized one part of the motor mount and just changed the other half. I assume the part that bolts on the block is the same for all AMC v8's and the frame horns are different for the different applications.

The I6 passenger side frame motor mount needs to be swapped out for a V8 mount.

So it is the part that bolts to the frame, not the part that bolts to the block? Correct?

Yes, there are 4 bolts that go through the frame.

It is bolted to the frame but also welded. I expect the bolts are used for alignment at the factory, and are not strong enough by themselves.

Hmm, my 77 showed no signs of any welds when I removed the frame mounts a few months ago. I removed them from other late 70s Jeeps as well and haven't notice any welds. Not saying there isn't any, just haven't seen welds on the several I've removed.

Hmm. Maybe I'm getting these confused with the spring hangers. I thought there was a bead of weld along the top edge of all of them.

The original poster referenced a 79 so I'm not positive about the earlier ones. All the spring hangers and frame engine mounts were bolt on items on the later CJs. At least that's what Ive seen.

Frame horns not welded. Only welded point on the spring attachemnts are the spring buckets.

I bet the motor is an I-6. A V6 would be a swap in...........
