what are these little orange caps for or should i say what used to go here.???

They are the little orange caps that plug the holes.

I recall that the detent balls and springs are behind them? You need the hole to load the detent for the shift rod, and the little orange caps plug the holes.

 

Yup. What Timgr said. Without them you will get oil leaks out and gunk and water in the transfer case.

 

huh. so these holes are supposed to have little caps in them. cool. just looked like someone shuved some little caps in there cause they were missing some thing.

I put some silicone over mine to make sure they seal and dont fall out.

Scouts used threaded in plugs. If you can find some they fit the Jeep transfer case also. Ssshhhh! Don't tell anyone I told you!R)
