Does anyone know if there were specific years or models that the CJ5 had a vent behind the hood and in front of the windsheild? I have a 1970 and I recently found that mine has the opening for one. It was Bondo-ed over. Do I have a 1970 Tub or is this a later model? I had the under the seat gas tank, which I thought would indicate an 1970. I owned a 1971 dauntless that did not have the vent. Does anyone here have this vent?

    Thanks

Is it centered, or are we maybe talking about the battery box "lid" that was on earler CJ's as carryover from the military version? The battery box lid was offset to the passenger side.

Intermediate......did the intermediates have the under the seat gas tank option? Maybe my Tub is a mis-matched thing. I am getting the feeling that mudweiser is a 1970 but had a doner (intermediate) for parts. Would explain my steering set-up and some of the other little things I have noticed.

More like a heater fresh air intake. Should go along with the under-dash heater, which started with the 1972 model? Under-the-seat tank was gone by 1971 due to federal regs IIRC.

If it has the underseat gas tank, I'd bet that a previous owner installed the vent in question. Maybe someone didn't like it and bondoed it in. There's probably less of a chance someone would take an intermediate body, cover the vent and install the opening for the underseat gas tank. Not out of the question of course if they were trying to hide the fact the body had been replaced. :?

That would make for interesting discussion if yours has a vent or the place for one.

It's funny...SSDutch has 4 holes in the cowl right in that spot, spaced in roughly the vent dimensions. Almost wonder if someone mounted a "fake" one there for awhile?

Never know with these old Jeeps...

My '69 has the vent, and covered in bondo, but I'm almost positive that I have a newer tub after all of the research I've done. The biggest give away for me was the lettering style of the word "JEEP" stamped in the metal. It looks like the early Jeeps have all block, capital, squared off letters (JEEP). The intermediates that I have looked at have a different font and a capital letter J (Jeep) with squared off edges. The later stamps (like mine) have very similar font and style as the TJ's with the capital J and rounded edges (Jeep). I suspect that my tub is from a '74-'75 and has the vent for the other heater/fresh-air intake but has the correct tailgate opening, and underseat tank. I hope this helps.
