I am trying to repair the carrier bearing on my front driveshaft. The bearing is loose in the mounting bracket and the driveshaft just flops around. I am assuming that the bearing was once mounted in some sort of rubber casing that clamped into the bracket. Am I assuming correctly? Has anyone found a way to repair this problem? From what I understand this bearing assembly is no longer available? For my final question, what makes the commando need a different driveshaft setup in the front from what a CJ with a v6 uses? I almost forgot, its a 1971 with a 3 speed and a 225 v6.

Yup, they have a rubber like sleeve/cushion thing. It's not really rubber it's, I don't really know what it is, but only Jeepster with the V6 used the two piece shaft and that cushion. Although it is somewhat possible to replace the bearing, the cushions are not available so most just get a one piece shaft made since Y pipes are hard to get too and they've gone dual exhaust so the exhaust being in the way is no longer a problem which is why they used them. Also the cost of getting a new bearing installed is pretty close to what it would cost to get a new drive shaft made.
I need some motivation to get off my butt and get back out to the shop tomorrow, I'll see if I have another spare good'ish one.

Finally found one of those cushions if you need it.
