225 Motor Rebuild

    Just wondering what it costs (roughly, exactly, a range, whatever) to get my 225 rebuilt. I could strip it down to a bare block by myself and get the new parts needed via mail order, but would obviously need to take it to a machine shop to get the cylinders honed or bored, and would prefer to have someone put the shortblock back together for me, so it has a warranty and stuff, and my dad says he hasn't put one together in too long now, and doesn't have degree wheels and stuff anymore. So, I'd like to upgrade to the 252H cam set with the timing chain and gears, springs, seats, and everything, but probably just keep my same heads, manifold, and carb I have on it now. I was also thinking boring it 40 over would be a nice little bit of bonus power. So, anyone know what this may cost me for parts and labor? If you need more info from me that I haven't thought of, let me know, and I'll provide it. And anyone know a good engine builder in Bend, OR? I know where to get the cam and stuff, but haven't looked for new pistons and rings and stuff yet, do I get them from summit too, or somewhere else? Any parts links would be appreciated.     this has been gone over before so maybe another post somewhere but I want to say it cost me about $1,500-$1,800 to rebuild my 225. That was for new cam, pistons, rings, bearings...

    Had the block machined .040" over and they "baked and tumbled" the block to get all rust and grease off. I put the engine together at school since they had all the good tools I needed.

    I think if you are not going to assemble the block yourself, a reman-factory short block will be your best option. You can order your engine with a cam if you want.

    You realize the difference between a short block and a long block? Re the heads, you can't really do the valve grinding work yourself, so you buy the parts you want and the shop rebuilds your heads.

    Go and talk to some rebuilders in your area - look them up in the phone book. Go to your local Napa store and ask them about rebuilt engines. Buy a book on engine rebuilding and read it http://www.amazon.com/Engine-Builde...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257862060&sr=1-1

    Check this thread above Joe has a really nice engine he wants to sell and you might be able to work out a deal. I think he would like it gone. He has put a lot of work in it you can tell and its ready to go.

    Tim, thanks for the link to the book, I'll probably pick it up since you recommend it, I've been wanting to get another engine building book for a while, just been dragging my feet on it. I lost my last one.

    My current motor has heads that I just freshly put on it, so they have been newly machined and everything, so I assumed they would work with a new short block. I guess I could be wrong though!

    I've seen a few websites selling rebuilt long blocks that "meet or exceed factory expectations." They are usually in the high 1400-range to right at 1600 (plus shipping of course). Seems like a decent option since they are ready to go, and have a warranty. Is one supplier better than another that anyone knows of (better customer service, better actual rebuild, etc?).
