I have a 56 CJ5 that is 12 volt. My question is, did eary CJ 5's come originally as 6 volt?

Also, is there any difference in the points and condensor for a 6 volt vs 12 volt. The reason I'm asking is, I want to replace the points and condensor and I want to make sure I get the right ones for my application.

    Thank you.

The very early cj5's came with 6 volt. I rebuilt a speedo from an early cj5 and the gauges are 6 volt. Not sure when the change occured..........

'56 would be 6 V from the factory, 12 didn't become an option until mid '57.

Points and condensor are the same for either voltage, the only difference between the two for ignition pieces would be the coils., the 12 v version comes with an internal resister.

    Thank's guys!

I just replaced the points, condensor, rotor, and cap, plugs and wires. The points were toast and that's what was causing it to run like crapola. Definitely notice the difference.

I had to break out the old dwell meter and timing gun that I haven't used in over 15 years. What a blast from the past!:)
