tear down...rebuild...?

    Well the tear down on the 75 CJ 5 is going great. My sons and I are learning a lot, logging, picture taking, etc. We have carefully removed the seats, soft top, fenders, front grill, hood, windshield, wiring harness, dash, gas pedal, heating/cooling controls and housings (and found a few nice nests). The only bolt we were forced to cut was the front grill bolt which attached under the front bumper. Today, the plan is to remove (maybe) cut the tub bolts and take off the tub. Later, we will take out the engine block. My main concern after all of this, with my/our absence of auto knowledge, is how the heck to put everything back. Scary. So I'll be looking at a lot of pictures, tech service manuals, diagrams, asking a lot of questions. Anyway, if anyone has any ideas, let me know. Thanks, Ben

    On my wifes YJ I measured out inside the tub to where the body bolts were. Then used a 1" hole saw to cut an access hole. Then I sprayed lots of penetrating oil on the tops of the bolt/nut. This helped to get some of them out. Good luck and don't forget to share pics with us.

    The Jeep Rebuilders Manual has been recommended a few times around here. I have yet to pick it up (not tearing into mine until next summer), but perhaps it would be a good reference and a confidence builder?

    BTW, I love the fact that you and your son are doing this together. Bravo, sir, bravo.

    Another resource you might want is a reprint of the factory parts book. These are the parts look-up books that a Jeep dealer would keep on the parts counter. Available here http://www.bjsoffroad.com/CartGenie/prod-683.htm and likely other places. Not cheap, but contains very detailed information and exploded drawings of all the systems on your Jeep. Become a member of ifsja.org and get a discount at checkout from BJ's.

    Going back together with mine, after frame off, I bought a complete stainless bolt kit. The kit is packaged with individual packages and labeled where they go. Made it a lot easier for me because my tear-down was over a twelve year period. No digital camera and a lot of the bolts I took out were not the correct ones to begin with. Enjoy your family project..

    Besides all those mentioned above (I have a Chilton, Haynes, Factory Service Manual, and the Jeep Rebuilders Manual), another invaluable resource is the parts manual. Mostly due to its exploded diagrams of all the components. Granted, your Jeep may differ greatly from another, but in general I find the diagrams extremely helpful.

    Here is a link to an online version ('74-'76). Check it out and you'll see what I mean.

    The group part numbers (engine, trans, electrical, etc.) are the first set of links, if you scroll down you'll see the "supplements", which are the exploded diagrams.

    Just from my perspective, I've used the above manuals in the order of 1) FSM 2) Rebuilders, 3) Parts manual, 4) Chilton/Haynes
