On the way back home from a Jeep swap meet last weekend I stopped by to visit a guy that I met some time ago that was building a CJ5 from the ground up using an aluminum tub. He was much further along than before and is almost finished. The direction he decided to take besides choosing the aluminum tub is as follows. The donor vehicle was a 1970 CJ5 with a V6 engine.

    Chevy 350 engine
    SM(something) 4speed transmission
Ford front axle with disc brakes
    Can't remember the rear axle
The front grille and tailgate are original steel
Original frame but boxed and modified for Saginaw steering
    Tilt steering wheel
    Stainless steel tail lights

His build quality looked excellent and I can't wait to see the finished product.

Question - If you had your way, how would you custom build a Jeep and what would be the ideal donor vehicle if limited to pre-1974?

I have my ideal custom - CJ3A(or a B would have been fine) - I have the first of the OR, but did it in a flexable manner.
    225 V6 - 4 bbl or FI
    SM465 or T18
    D18
    Warn OD
D 30 Front, Disc, 4.88s, OX or ARB Locker
D 44 Rear, 11" - going to Disc soon, FF, 4.88s, OX or ARB
Saginaw, Tilt Flaming River Column, PRP Suspension seats, Holbrook Long Leafs, RS9000 Shocks, full cage, custom bumpers, soon to have sliders...

    To each his own.

My plan so far is a 4.3 chebby motor with an SM465 (I think) trans behind the stock xfer case, S-10 wiring harness. Long leafs, Rancho 9000's (thanks to this site I decided on that). 32" tires, power steering, and hopefully brakes. I'll eventually be putting axles on and maybe upgrading to 35's, discs, and lockers. Was considering an explorer rear end for the discs and the availability.
