Have a 1956 CJ5 that I think I need to rebuild the T90 transmission. It jumps out of 2 nd gear when coasting down a hill.

And when I drive about 45 to 55 mph I hear some kind of transmisson noise. It is not grinding, but sounds like a bearing or like metal rubbing against something. I got it up to about 60 and started hearing it. To check where the noise was coming from I put the transmission in neutral at this speed and the sound stopped . Do due to that, I think I can rule out a driveshaft problem or even a front our rear axle.

Any of you guys ever have a similar problem? If so what did you do.

Anyone know of a good T90 for sale at the right price?

    Thanks
    Cliff

CT: I had the exact same symptom of 2nd popping out of gear when coasting, but not in any other gear. That's why that T-90 is on my garage floor, lol. Anybody want it?

On the noise...I'm wondering if it occurs at a certain, fixed RPM in any gear, not just 3rd. Run it up in 1st or 2nd at a high RPM...do you hear it? When you hear the sound, what happens when you push the clutch in and hold it for a few seconds?

The T-90 always made noise in my '69, especially when decellerating/coasting, but functioned fine otherwise...as long as the fluids were topped off (are yours?).

I'd also try the same test using using the LO x-case gears to see if a pattern develops. How about reverse?

Barring really good luck, your cheapest "good" T-90 is the one you already have + a rebuild kit. HTH!!

I would definatly work on the T90. I have a book that figures it is stronger than the T14. I have been in mine. It had the same sort of problem, jumping out of second. On a whim I filed the syncro teeth just a smidge. It worked! Still needs rebuilding. The nice part is that the parts are in-expensive.
Naturally this is the time to think about sticking in a 4 speed........

I also recoomend just rebuilding the T90, very simple to work on. And while you have the gear boxxes off, may want to rebuild the Dana 18 while it is out, also not the largest of projects and it will give you piece of mind.

Go to the Novak page about the T90:
    http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/t90_rebuild.htm

Addresses the "pops out of 2nd" problem specifically.

If you want to buy a rebuilt T90, Herm might be able to help you:
    http://www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com/

Due to their age, you may or may not get a better transmission if you buy a used T90.

Try putting the tranfser case in neutral and running through the gears to isolate the noise to one gear, or one speed.

Ditto what others have said. Get a complete rebuild kit from Novak. New bearings, parts to rebuild the synchro, new second gear, cluster shaft, good instructions. Do the same for the t-case, you won't regret it. Just study everything before and as you pull it apart.

Great advise from all. Especially liked the idea of putting the transfer case in neutral & also low range to see if I can get it to duplicate the noise of what it is doing in 3rd gear high range. Boy you guys are sharp.

Alan Will also try and push the clutch in next time I hear it and see what happens.

Thanks to each one of you for your advice. It is probably rebuild time this winter.

    Regards
    Cliff
