I am having an issue where my rotor hits the inside electrodes on my distributor cap. My first thought was the wrong cap/rotor but the numbers seem to check out at Napa. Right now I am running the new cap and the old rotor because the new/new combo hit hard enough to crack the rotor. The motor runs ok and because this isn't something I caught right off the bat I can tell from experience that the rotor will cut a set of grooves on the cap and putter along just fine for a whole tune up cycle. The grooves do not cut cleanly around implying a wobble but I don't see it. It is a family jeep and the motor was only ever out once and I personally did it so I don't see how the distributor could get bent. Ideas?

Is the distributor worn out? Check the shaft for side play.

check for up and down movement. my rotor started moving up and was hitting the posts in cap too,it would wear out the carbon button quickly. Then I get a miss from the carbon dust in the cap.

Worn distributor is likely. The next step is when the rotor shatters out on the road someplace.

Don't ask me how I know. But some black electrical tape got me home.

Ok so I checked it but I am not sure how much is too much. It will go up and down quite a bit, 1/8 inch or so but side to side maybe a 100th. I am also getting a gear wine noise that I think is coming from the distributor. I figured it was the rotor dragging and filed off just a little brass from the spot where they rub. Had no effect on anything. It could also be the alt whining, I will have to pull a belt to confirm. Is 100th too much, I know I have seen worse on old tractors, what about the gear noise, I don't remember hearing that before. Oil pressure is still top notch if that is of issue.
