I am slowly working on getting my CJ back on the road. The project I started today was to inspect/rebuild and OD I picked up on eBay a few years ago.

Overall the OD looked good but once I took it apart I found a lot of metal shavings inside the case. And the oil holes were filled in when too much RTV was used.

I noticed that it was missing the thrust washers between some of the planetary gears and it was causing the gears to rub metal on metal; which caused some of the shavings.

But even more concerning was the fact that the "syncro dogs" were missing.... All three of them and the springs
What is the syncro dog used for? Could that be where all the metal shavings came from?

Ok.... so I decided to purchase all the replacement parts I needed from Advance Adapters... But when I go to check out my total in parts is $68 but shipping is $95 for UPS Ground; what the heck!?!?

Any other suppliers of overdrive parts?

The shift dogs line up the clutch sleeve with the teeth on the blocking ring. No shift dogs -> no synchromesh.

Yes, call Herm www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com He's the sage of the overdrive.

I emailed Herm.... He can supply the parts but could not help with some of the questions I had.

Does anyone have a picture of the "Ring Oil Slinger" (part# 929869) and where it is to be installed? I have the exploded view but I believe the previous owner reassembled the unit incorrectly as it is missing a lot of internal parts.

    Thanks

    Doh!!!

I have heard lots of great things about Herm so I reached out to him.... He was unable to answer my questions based on the information I could provide.

So I used advance adapters website to get part numbers and ordered them from Herm.

They took about 2.5 weeks to get here... not too bad but they sent the wrong parts.

I have no doubt that Herm will get it straightened out but is sucks that I have to wait before I can finish the rebuild.

Sorry you had a bad exp. Herm is a great guy and the best guy for OD info and parts. I've rebuilt a few over the years and there not that hard, but there are a few little things that need checking and possibly machined. Herm is very reasonable on rebuilding and really has the experiance. I'd ship it to him and have it rebuilt it.
