clutch stuck

    My '62 cj5 w/ V6 sat in garage for maybe 6 months... now the clutch is stuck. Won't disengage. Can still drive it around in first, reverse, low range, high range...IF I start it in gear. Tried pulling it around driveway with CJ2a and slamming clutch some, tried jacking up rear end, running it and slamming brakes. No good.

    Now what? What do I do next? With the V6 there is no access hole on the bell housing. I'm really stumped. Help please!

    Make sure the throwout fork is still moving. Does the pedal feel OK?
    If so, pull the front bumper up to a tree, put it in 4 low, 1st gear, hold the clutch in, and hit the starter.

    Cool, Patrick! Yeah, the clutch feels just like it did before. Will look to see about the fork movement, then will try your suggestion tomorrow.

    If the pedal feels the same, the fork is more than likely moving .
    I've heard more than one guy free up a stuck clutch this way.

    Patrick, so why did your tree method un-stick my clutch when pulling it around the yard slamming clutch didn't work, jacking up rear, running jeep, slamming brakes didn't work, speed shifting first to reverse while holding down clutch didn't work.

    I am impressed. But why did your method work when others methods failed?

    When your dragging it around, you have to overcome the gear ratios to get enough force to get it to pop loose. Against a tree (or wall we used) the motor at the clutch are working against the gear ratios, and makes it easier to pop loose.

    My theory - when you drag it, the drivetrain is basically in tension with the ground - you're pulling on the clutch. This introduces a lot of slack, which reduces the strain rate on the stuck clutch (ie less impact). Against a tree, the gears and drivetrain are in compression (the drivetrain is pushing on the clutch), and there is no (or little) slack. Higher strain rate knocks the clutch loose, just like an impact wrench works sometimes when a big breaker bar won't.

    Mom's '55 has done this twice. We've never had to use a tree yet, but I would not be above it. When you are "slamming the clutch" you aren't going to break it loose. You must be holding it down, and either slamming the brake or the gas, and the engine has more torque than what the brakes can apply.

    Last time I broke it loose I started it in first, and with clutch on the floor took off with plenty of throttle. I was slipping the tires in gravel when I hit the blacktop, and that broke it loose immediately.
