Since this is a thread on welting....My jeep originally had rubber welting, not the canvas type. I talked to every supplier and they told me that was not correct. I know mine was never changed and it also had these wire snap-in fasteners, not rivets. Anyone else have this type?

Rivets were not used (originally) but the spring wire snap in's (can't remember the name) are still avail by various fastener suppliers. The welting is a fabric not rubber. The only two places it was used (that I know of) is the grille to hood and the wind-shield stand-off's.

Nick says some M38A1s used it between the fenders and body. Hood and standoffs are the only two CJ locations AFAIK.

From '74 or so on, the hood welting was replaced with rubber buttons. Also AFAIK, no rubber welting was used from the factory - could have been replaced?

Maybe someone replaced it....oh well, I just bought the canvas stuff anyway. Kind of a throwback to the WW2 stuff anyway. I was told that same welting is on Model A's as well

    What are windshield standoffs?

Also earlier someone mentioned that there is a fabric around the gas tank? Where is this and what is the material?

Windshield standoffs are used to support the windshield when it's folded down on the hood. They are shown here at the top of the windshield, over the wipers:
