Nickmil, thanks for keeping ppl straight!

All this talk about swapping a D30 in place of a D27 has got me thinking too...

So, the r&p I have is a 3:72, I guess. 41 teeth on the ring, 11 on the pinion.

So, just what IS the carrier? I was referring to the thingie the ring gear bolts to, with all those little spider gears in it. I figured the case would be the pumpkin shell that everything's crammed into.

To me (I may be wrong here but its what I've always called it) the carrier would be the center section from say a Ford 9" or a Chrysler 8 3/4" Banjo style rear end. The case is what the ring gear attaches to that house's the spider gears.

    Ah, OK, thank you!

Anybody want this 3:72 R&P set? I'm not gonna need it when I get the axle finished.

Yes you are going to need a different case for the 5.38 gears.sorry for the bad news.also are the brakes 10" or 11". my 73 cj-5 came with 10" IIRC,but it was a 6 cyl.not a v-8.do a search on the gear change and case.

So as to not confuse people in the future who may find this thread, in 1972 Jeep started putting 11" brakes on the CJs.

Yep Randy's R&P has the one you need for about $60. Get your gear set, spider/side gear or locker, and master rebuild kit from them too. Everything else you can pick up at a FLAPS (err, get a couple of spindle bearing kits from Quadratec-FLAPS couldn't figure it out). That'll pretty much do the axle. I did a Tie Rod flip to clear the springs too, you may or may not need that.
To finish you'll need spring plates (or dremel the holes in the ones you got)and U-bolts, a 1310 yoke for the front of the D18, a new driveshaft, and a drag link to fit your setup. You'll probably need shims to set caster, but wait and get the numbers from an alignment shop so they're right the first time.
I did all that over a 4 day weekend working from dawn to dusk so its a big job but well worth it.:v6:

Well, according to Randy's, since my D30 has 3:72 gears in it now, that case (carrier, whateverthehellitis) will work with the 5:38 gears he's shipping me. I hope so. Once both axles are done and assembled, that will give me some incentive to get the frame out of storage and start slapping parts on it.

This is true cause I needed a new case to house my 3.73 gears as the axle had 3.54 gears from the factory.

The break on the 30 is 3.73 and numerically higher----not to be confused by
the break on a dana 44 is 4.10 and numerically higher.

Oh, hey! This axle didn't have any kind of hubs on it, and I'm probably gonna need some. Does anybody have any good suggestions what I should look for?

I think you need 27 spline for the D30 - Herm carries them (Warn premium) for $130 (I think), but a lot of places have them.

    I love those wheels!

OK, hubs are covered, bought a new set.

The wheels, I don't have anymore. I bought a parts donor Jeep for $300, I wanted the springs and 11" brakes, and sold the rest to Firegod33 for $150. He ended up not needing/wanting the D30 front axle, so I took it too since the brakes were still on it.

Now, new question for everybody....... Am I going to be able to use my original D25 front driveshaft? Or will I have to perform some kind of magic to get one to work?

Sorry, but most of my parts and stuff are buried too deep to just looky and compare.

It 'should' work - I can look at the stock ones on the D30s I have in the yard this weekend if you want me to.
