So there is talk about this on early 5 board.

When was the first year that
    a) seat bets were on the cj5
    b) seat belts were standard equip
    c) seat belts were Law for cj not cars or trucks

Just need this cleared up and figured the restore guys would know
my 74 ren cj5 had them, my 69 DJ doesn't have them

Extra credit to tell me the same info on the DJ side of things

Well, for the postals, the USPS would have set the specs for them. Civilian DJs would conform to the same rules as CJs.

NHSB issued initial Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 208, 209, setting standards for lap and shoulder belts in front outboard positions, lap belts in all other positions (to take effect 1/1/68 and 3/67, respectively) - you'd have to check the old statutes to see when utility vehicles were included. I expect you'd have to check the old sales literature to see when seat belts were offered as optional equipment.

    Thank you!!!
I had started to think that I was asking too hard of questions. ;)

"Light trucks and multi-purpose vehicles are required to have safety belts if built after December 31, 1971.So, if Jeeps were defined in the last sentence (I think they were) the answer is after 1971"

Any answer on this last quote? Did they fall in truck class or sense the were under 10K they would be a car?

I just took a set of those out of mine. They came out of Dad's '67 Tux.
The buckles go where I didn't trust them. That, and I wanted all 4 to match.

I would not trust the old webbing, I just last month did 150 yards sliding upside down in my TJ, the only things that saved my life were a FULL rollcage and the newer design of modern seatbelts with both roller locks and shoulder belts. I am now fitting full seats, modern belts and full cages in both my 70 and 67

    I forgot a T.
They got to the point where I didn't trust them. Just kinda loose and worn, and I don't know how the buckles would hold up. The webbing looks OK, but it's old.
