When I took the side cover off the block to adjust the exhaust valves I noticed that the bolts holding it on were barely tightened. Now when I go to put them back on it seems as if they are too short. Could this be? Whenever I do something that shouldn't take that long it seems to be an all day affair.

You probably just don't have the bolts lined up correctly with the bosses they thread into. The side cover bolts don't get tightened real tight or it will warp the cover. Just snug them down good.

Are you sure the remainder of the bolts are not broken off and still in the block? Sounds like they were overtightened and you just broke them off when undoing them?

The bolt is not broken on the end and yes it is a new gasket. I guess I'll play with it some more tomorrow night as today was frustrating when I tried to put the bolts back in. It's probably me.:)

Flip the cover over... it recesses back into the block...otherwise the bolts are too short. :)

Thank you very much, I'm embarrassed to say you hit the nail on the head. Problem solved.

I did that same thing many years ago. Don't know why, I didn't remember it.
