Another solution to a one pice tie rod is to find a 2 hole right side knuckle and run the drag link direct. It does away with the double tie rod end and gives more spring clearence. I am pretty sure all the knuckles for the closed knuckle diffs (25/27/44) interchange. I used a knuckle from a 63 wagon and made the tie rod from an intermediate CJ5 by shortening it and threading it about 1.5 inches deeper. I think these are 11/16-18 thread and taps are available from any of the industrial supply houses (ENCO, MSC, etc).

Here you go. As stated the down tube is from the original setup till I
    get the new one machined.

That looks a lot better than the original design. Does anyone know why they did it with all the extra TREs?

I'll bet the extra long tube was for use with Herm's steering conversion kit.

Will his tie rod kit work with a saggy box in front of the cross member? That's what I'm doing this winter.

Sort of an off topic here but as long as you are doing steering stuff, ( and looking at your steering knuckle seals), you might as well check out your king pin bearings.
I was sort of surprised at what I found.

Same amount of TRE's. Just a different layout for the tubes.

Probably did it for independent travel for the front wheels.

I cut a hole and sleeved the cross member and run the steering shaft thru the cross member. there are several post on here of ways it has been done. I love the end results of how it steers and handles.

I understand that's what many do for the Saginaw box, but how does it pertain to the one piece tie rod with Ross steering?

I was under the impression that I could mount the box lower and run the shaft under the cross member using Mcruff's spud shaft. I'm still learning, there is so much info on the swap, its just hard to find it all.

You certainly can. We're getting off topic here though.

Looks good. As my t/rod ends only have 25 miles on them, one thinks I could buy the one long piece and be done for less than the price of his kit??? Not sure I'd drop the coin if I had to modify my new parts to make them fit...................That's why I asked in my earlier post if this was a direct replacement. Evidently it's a little "indirect".

I bought the tie rod end (with the hole) and long tie rod from Advance Adapters, and used the RH factory tie rod for the drag link (bell crank to tie rod).It was just the right length.
I think it cost me right at $100, but that was 6 or 8 years ago.

You can buy just the parts from Herm.

My friend called Herm and asked about the down tube. Seems it was
cut for the Saginaw setup. So the way I fixed it is the permanent way
to do it. So I don't think I will pursue the making the down tube fit.

From Herms site. Reuse your TRE's.

    #6830 - Long Tie Rod, Extra Heavy 1" Thick-wall Tube (35 1/2" length), jam nuts included. - $45

Trying to decide on my steering while I do my V6 swap into my CJ3a. For some I reason I like the Ross? I think I will do this upgrade along with the V6 Ross box.
