T-90 to Chevy Info/ID Help Needed!

This is driving me crazy... I have been searching google and various forums for a week and can not find any info on this bellhousing. I have seen a few pics of them floating around, but every time I stumble upon one all the seller knows is that it is for a Jeep.

I bought the Jeep like this. It is a 48 with a 60something Chevy 283 V8 and the stock T-90. Tranny was making noise, took it apart and the front main bearing fell out in pieces. I just want to make sure and get the right stuff to fix it and all the adapters that I see are the Novak style that go between the t90 and chevy bell housing. I have 2 other transmissions out of CJ2a's, but the bearing and input shafts are different. I took the adapter to a big transmission shop and they had never seen one, but got me fixed up with a bearing and seal, but now I am having issues with matching up the clutch. I picked up a clutch for a 65 283, but it is not the right one. It is 11" and the one I took off is 10". Any help would be great.

    1. Who made/makes this style adapter?

    2. Is there a clip retainer or something that sits in the machined/recessed area above where the bearing sits in the bellhousing?

    3. What clutch does it use?

    Thanks a million.

The 11 inch may not be a problem if all else matches up. Does the clutch disk fit the shaft? Does the pressure plate bolt up to the fly-wheel? Is the height of both pressure plates the same? Do you have the matching throw-out bearing to P-plate? If everything is yes, then I would re-surface the fly-wheel and go with it.

What's the length of your input shaft?

The bearing retainer is the part that bolts on to the adapter and which the throw-out bearing slides over. In your pictures, it looks to me like the bearing retainer is intact in one picture and broken off in the other. Is it broken?

Not sure what you are thinking of with the clip or whatever above some bearing.

You might have the long input shaft (from a Utility truck), the adapter bell, and the T-90 bearing retainer. The retainer might be machined down to fit inside the Chevy TO bearing.

    what Walt says.
regarding the bell/adapter, I believe that's made by TransDapt/Transadapt..something like that.

That's a Chevy bearing retainer (4 bolt) most adapters make you use the Chevy.
The T90 only has 3 mounting bolts if I recall.

Shouldn't it have a tube sticking out of it? In one photo it looks ok and in the other it looks like the tube is missing and just the flange is there.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    correct
I noticed that in the pics too Tim.
maybe he replaced it; the one does look like it was broken.

Yes, it is a Chevy bearing retainer and it was broken off, but I replaced it. Now I am having problems with the pilot bushing.

There was no pilot bearing in it at all, chevy ID is wrong. Any thoughts??

the pilot bushings that came with the adapters were special made.
Offenhauser was one company that furnished them.
we need Nickmil to respond here
you could always have a machine shop turn one down for you as a last resort.
    maybe Advance Adapters ?

Also I would rotate that bearing adapter to point the drain down. About 180 from where it is now. That way no water will be trapped.

I just got a clutch for my 5 and had the parts guy actually look in a BOOK. Cross reference guide lists the clutch kits by spline count, shaft size and clutch disk diameter. It also listed the size pilot bushing and length of throwout bearing that comes with the kit. The brand I bought was Sachs and both the ones I have done now work great. Just gotta find someone that will step away from the computer screen and be able to read a book.

its a 10.5 clutch. the pack comes with clutch disk, pressure plate, throw out bearing, pilot bushing and alignment tool. now the pilot bushing might not work for your application, but this should work for ya buddy.

My adapter plate to the motor says GM with a part number on it. It looks just like yours. I talked to a friend of mine. He seems to remember them coming with the early 50's power glides from chevrolet. I have not taken the bell housing off to look at it. My jeep has a 350 chevy in it.

I checked everything out with a dial caliper and it looks like the stock pilot bushing will work? I hate to put it all together for no reason.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

it's been too long for me to recall
I know Jeep didn't have the right size pilot bushing...
maybe it's a stock GM type..you could be correct.

The Chevy one was close to the right OD, but the ID was not right. The one I got that was stock Willys was not right either. Advance Adapters has one on their site that is .629 ID X 1.090 OD, but the length is .750 so I am not sure if that is too long or not.

when I put the 5.0 Ford in my cj6 I needed to mate to a T18. I got the brass bushing for the 5.0 motor and had a local machine shop turn it down to the correct ID for me.......they didn't even charge me
might need to do something similar in your case
