This past week my jeep started running rough or barely would run, then one morning backfired in the garage and it was just a little loud(sorry did U say something I cant hear U) So I started checking things, make sure plug wires were on, cap, checked dist. to make sure the hold down bolt was tight, fiddled w/ carb. I then started removing one plug wire at a time. I found the back driver side was not fireing. pulled the plug it was not fooled, so I figured do a compassion test. A hole 45 lbs. I figure I have a valve problem.

The the question pull the heads and have them done or the hole engine. I'm leaning towards the head route for now.:v6:

Nothing wrong with just fixing what is broken. What is the condition of the rest of the engine? Oil consumption, oil pressure, blue smoke and compression of other cylinders ?

I suggest you check compression on all the cylinders, both wet and dry.

A single bad cylinder typically means a bad valve.

i had the same problem 2 years ago, #5 cylinder had 40# the rest were 155# the exhaust valve was burned. the machine shop said it was from burning unleaded gas. had them rebuilt with stainless valves and hardened seats. i also put in a new cam, lifters and rocker arms and shafts, runs like brand new now.

I'm more inclined to believe that the bad valve was already thin, ground once already, and on it's way out.
I've been using nothing but 87 unleaded in mine since it was rebuilt in 1985, no worries.
On long driving trips ,I have used a lead additive in the gas.
Anyway, I've not seen any ill effects to blame on unleaded fuel.

I say possible broken valve spring. I had one break on the hi way at night, running bad,,, then a HUGE explosion lit up the whole area,I still remember the look on the lady in the car next to me ,shock and aw -baby,! also torn a hole in the muffler I could fit my hand in. If it's a spring I had to buy a whole pack so I have a spare you can have.

regardless of what caused the valve to fail, it was worth a extra hundred dollars to me to have it fixed with parts that will probably out last me.
