I have been collecting parts for a power steering conversion for my 69/70 Jeepster. The power steering box I got has the large 13/16 x 36 spline input shaft and the steering shaft with the bell coupler that I have has the 3/4 x 30 spline coupler on it. The coupler is easy enough to change off of the shaft assembly but I cant seem to get an answer from any store if the replacement bell coupler is a 13/16 x 36 or a 3/4 x 30.

The omix-ada part # is 18018.06 and the Jeep # is 998710. I have called omix-ada , tellico 4x4 ,Turner , 4wdhardware, etc. They all tell me that its an O.E.M. part and dont have one available on the shelf to count the splines for me.
Has anyone used this part before and know what size it is?
    Thanks,Oz

    { EDIT: The power gearbox is Saginaw }

in a Jeep application, with power steering, they would all use the 998710 coupler.
this would include CJs and full size models, Wagoneer, J10 etc.
no help, but we only used the one coupler. (spline count unknown, I don't have one in front of me as well)
was your p/s gear from a Jeep application ?

Yes ,its claimed to be a factory unit off another Jeepster/Commando.Several sources for the gearbox say it would be a pre 1977 unit because of the 13/16" x 36 spline ,after 77 the online source "Borguson" indicates Saginaw went to 3/4" x 30 spline...but the bell coupler listing shows the application to for 72 to 86 CJ. I do know that the manual gearbox used the 3/4" x 30 spline ...so by default I want to believe that this part# /power application is the 13/16 x 36 but kinda want to confirm this before I order it.Would you know if both versions use they 3/4" connector shaft? I suppose I should confirm that I can mearly change the bell coupler,I presume that the only differance in the 2 couplers is the splined portion on the end of the bell and the the couplers can be swapped to obtain the desired size/spline on the end of the shaft assembly.

On my 71 Commando I used a coupler kit from Crown, part # 18018.06 to fit years 72 - 86. My power steering gear came from a 70 Wagoneer. It slipped right on to the original steering shaft. The steering shaft and the input shaft on the PS gear are different sizes.

Thanks for the input guys. It would seem that the power application bell coupler would indeed be the 13/16 x 36. HeavyIron ,would you be willing to measure the diameter of your connector shaft for me? I am thinking that if you have a 3/4" diameter connector shaft then the power bell coupler would fit onto the shaft 3/4 shaft assembly that I have...and that the same shaft was originally used for either power or manual application... and that one can simply change the bell coupler to the desired diameter/spline count to fit the steering box as needed. That was my original assumption but we all know what can happen when one assumes. This would be a lot easier if the manufacture would simply state the size/spline count in addition to the model year application in their specifications.

I put a micrometer on the steering shaft and it measured out at 0.754"

So I guess I have .002 of paint on there then ;)

It was fun getting the steel plumbing to fit under the grill. It is seriously tight and I have to take the gear loose in order to remove the steel pipe and fittings.

Thanks for the info,I can see where the steel lines are going to be tough to fit up there. Would you be able to post up a picture of yours for me to see?

I got the idea from jpflat2a to bend up my own steel tubes and make mt own hoses.

Here's the supply side. I drilled out the backside of the inverted flare nut a little so I could slide the nut up onto the bend in order for me to flare the tube. I did that so I could make the bend as close to the flare as possible.

Here's a shot of the underside.

Finished product for the pressure side.

    One more.

    Sorry for the large pics.

Thanks for the pictures and the link to the other thread. That looks close but also looks like everytrhing worked out real good. One last question for you...in the second picture that shows the bell coupler un-hooked from the steering box, does the bell coupler protrude up into the oval relief opening that is in the bottom of the crossmember when everything is hooked up?

    Good question.
I think it does a little, I seem to remember thinking that it was a good thing that relief hole was there.
I can grab a pic of it when I get home this evening.
