I am having trouble with my speedometer cable loosening at the transfer case connection. I am having difficulty getting a wrench on the nut to tighten it well. And as a result it leaks oil, and loosens frequently.
    Anybody have any tricks.

Also, how long should an intermediate shaft last in a Dana 18? I replaced and rebuilt mine about 2000 miles ago and I'm starting to get a little more whine.

That speedo cable connection to the t-case has been a problem for me also. There's not room to get in there and tighten it. Mine is also leaking and I have read on here in the past that you can add an o-ring (or there's supposed to be one) at the connector to help seal in the oil. Mine does not take a wrench - it's just a knurled connector that you "tighten" by hand (well, you would tighten it if you could get your hand in there!).

The intermediate shaft will last a lot longer than 2000 miles if you used a good quality one. There are apparently many poor quality ones being sold that do not last. I paid the extra $ and got a Novak shaft several years ago.

If you get to the point where you drop the drivetrain a touch you can sometimes get in there and tighten it before it gets tucked all the way back up.

We used to put some RTV on it as we put it in.

I'll try the RTV , but I'll have to drop the crossmember to get at it. Thanks Chuck!

I had the same problem about a year ago. I was able to get an open end wrench on the adapter with very little trouble and removed it - dressed the threads - added ultra black and relaced it. Put the speedo cable back on using light pressure and a small channel lock.

    No leak there any more.

Now if I could just stop the leak at the main shaft and figure out why my speedo head gets stuck, I'd have a fairly functional Jeep :)

On the jeep (69 cj-5) I got, someone had made a hole in the frame in line with the speedo connection and the cable went straight into the connector and was able to be finger tightened without any problem.
