I found a used DETROIT locker for the front axle for $250. Whats the opinion on detroits in the front? I know ARBs would be preferable but the price for this one seems tempting...

Sounds like a good deal. It's only on when the front end is locked in. If your wheeling hard you can't beat a Detroit. Just my 2 cents

Make sure its the right one for your gear set. 3.73 and higher numerically use a different model number then 3.55 and lower numerically.

front locker makes it way hard to steer in 4wd. i'm locked f&r and I'm probably gonna twinstick the t-case so i can dis engage the front.

but having a locker makes a huge difference offroad.

I know with a detroit in the front it will be very hard to steer on rock slabs. we hit the granite slabs in rub, dusy and sidewinder (coral caynon) and we had to unlock the hubs to drive. it will turn locked but it feels bad from binding.maybe go higher grade axleshafts .oh and where in sd are you?

well .a lincoln lock is no fun the the front end. i think you will break things . if your a basher front will go pop. but if you take your time and no bash it would hang 30 or 25/27i asume 30 since it's in the intermediate catagory.

I'm running 33x13.50's and lockers amd havent had any problems with axleshafts. I'd says wait and see if you actually break first before dumping hundreds of $$$ on specialty shafts.

I run a lock right in my 30 with 35x12.5 MTRs.

I ran stock shafts until I broke the ears off the passenger side.

Upgraded to 1541 shafts with 44 sized U-Joints. They lasted longer but still spit a cap. I was able to drive it off the trail though without replacing it.

I then upgraded to Cromolly with the larger u-joints. I wheeled fine for several years until I wedged a bolder up between the passenger tire and the wheel well. Sheared the outter. Looked like someone had lazer cut the shaft. It was that clean of a break.

The moral is that you can break anything. It depends on how hard you are trying. Wheel what you have. If it breaks then take that opportunity to upgrade it.

As for driving, I actually think my Jeep is more stable with the locker and the front hubs locked in on the highway. As long as the t-case is in 2wd you won't have any problems driving it. It will be a little more noisy because the front drive shaft is spinning.
